When do you decide that you won't spend your life chasing the almighty dollar?

I find it ironic, as well.

I mean, I don't work for dollar bills, just what they can buy. I would rather have the product than the item that buys it.

What I don't get is why (and how) a person will do something treacherous for money, because I thought that the whole purpose of money was to be more happy, and if you are selling something you cannot buy back, you will never be happy once you give that up. I don't get it.

When I was a kid my dad would buy me almost whatever I wanted, when I was into toys and action figures. So, maybe that is why money isn't so fascinating to me. I've seen people do some pretty dumb things for money. What they did to receive it, what they gave up, can never be bought back, and I have no clue what they were thinking.

You get to decide when you have enough money for retirement. Or when we go back to the "fend for yourself" era whereas we hunt, grow our own crops, etc. Money/gold has always been used in "civilized societies". It's the motivation people need to help people around them. Think about it: How many people in the world (not just Americans) would actually work to help build society if there wasn't incentive? Not many people volunteer in this world. The more money you have, the better the living situation is usually. Stuck in a bad neighborhood? You need more money to get to a better one.

That's why we have lotteries and such. Everyone says "no" to taxes and yet we (I'm guilty of this) take our chances on the lottery. But we're mostly stuck because of an economic background that's been like this since the kings of old. Most people are poor (there is NO middle class anymore in the US). We work 2 or 3 jobs just to get ends to meet. We wish everyday that we'd hit the lottery just once so we can take a break. We say no to taxes because it takes what little left we have after getting taxed already.

Then again, money can change people. That's why we have a problem with corporations and CEO's getting huge payouts. A big corporation does NOT need a CEO. There used to not be them back in the day. But somehow, we got a boom of them. But they get HUGE payouts. And then, in return, the company pays minimal just to make them a profit. And since these companies have high prices for everything, they make 2 times the profit (labor and product). But for every high priced item there is, it takes more of our money away and it doesn't leave us with much. It's capitalism and it sucks.

We could scale back some of our needs but let's say, electricity. Most people say you can cut that back. Here in Florida, most counties, it's against the law to not have electricity. There's a reason for it. Back before air conditioners and even electricity, when settlers came here, MANY died from heat stroke. This is especially true with the high humidity here in the summertime. So, we need our air conditioners here and we also need electricity for that.

But I know if I ever won the lottery, I'd never become a snob. I lived most of my life as poor and know my roots from it. I know I could never change my ways because of the way I grew up. I appreciate what I have. Money can buy us the finer things but we don't need them.

Yet, if it wasn't for the "almighty" dollar, you wouldn't have that computer to be on so you can write that question. How many people would volunteer 40 hours a week for life just to clean toilets?

Capitalism creates competition and it gets things done, for the most part. If we didn't have it, we'd probably be right before the time when we invented light bulbs.

But capitalism sucks because it creates unfair ways of going about things sometimes. It makes it so qualified people can't find a job. Then that person doesn't have money, loses his/her home, lives out of dumpsters, etc.

Still, even though it's unfair sometimes, it's the best and FAIREST system we have as of now.

Hopefully, one day, we can be like on Star Trek whereas they don't use money: We all strive to help each other out.

Sadly, it doesn't work like that right now.

And it's a big endless circle that we have to live in. Where would we be if EVERYONE in the world went on strike? We'd kill what economy we have.

Unfortunately , the link between $$$$ and survival often causes a mental illness that can last a life time .
Some people have the capacity to see beyond that ,
But the evolution requires a definite interest on the part of the individual to be more than their bank account .

Sadly it doesn't. Its kinda like the thirst for soda. Everyone knows that its just coloured sugar water with no nutritional value that is ruining people's health but people just can't seem to get enough of it.

When you have a moment of clarity and redefine what success and happiness really mean to you. At that moment, the way you look at the world and at other people will change forever! Your world will be infinitely more satisfying.

Money is merely a medium by which to acquire those things that we want and need. So, to answer your question, the quest for money will stop when want and need stop.
