Being in a band that is successful is like being married and divorce can be ugly. It takes a lot more then talent to get along with band mates and getting along is often overshadowed by vanity. Most people I have played with have talent, few were dedicated, knowledgeable and in touch with the realities of the business of music.

I would say talent, but considering the quality of today's music, that's obviously not the case. If a band needs the instrument you play, and your the best around (or the only one) then your probably in.

In the old times i would say you need talent. nowadays, thanks to the many music industries around, you just need to be good looking. But if you are starting it yourself, then the talent is necessary, plus instruments (guitars, drums and what else you fancy to play) put an advert in the local paper so you can get some people, have an audition and choose your musicians. You also need a place to practice, and you need to have patience, and be a good leader. Singing is not an issue as it comes with good practice. Later you can get a good agent to manage you, but i advice you to manage it yourself first, and have good mind reading unless you want to jump straight away to a recording contract to get only 90% of your earnings... be careful with some agents, they can rip you off easily. for a Higher step the best bet is to find a recording company yourself. Good luck x

a pretty good understanding of your instrument is a plus. Many times auditions are required. If you are talented and driven to play then you will. I hve played in several bands myself and have had a blast doing it. do it for the music cause the pay sucks.

You have to have a lot of knowledge about the genre your band is making. Plus know a lot of chords, harmonies, and all that jazz. If you're going to be in a rock band, make sure you know what you're doing. For Electronic stuff, it's going to be expensive if you want the right sound for it. For Classical, you have to have a lot of experience in that area.

I would like to say talent, but there are so many no talents starting bands these days, that that theory is destroyed.

Be able to work with the other members in the band, and most important musical abilities

Total self-absorption. I dated two drummers. Both loved the color purple. Both thought they were former KISS band members. Both thought the world revolved around them and their amazing abilities and that women everywhere just had to have them.

So being a self centered jerk is the number 1 requirement.
