It is a database of satellite and areal photographs, some of which are recently taken and some of which are years old, and a search engine that displays the right one at the right magnification to show what you request. It is not a live view from space.

Googleearth has a free download and you can experience it for yourself. Its awesome, I love it. Its pictures from a Satellite and you can zoom it in like an airplane over any part of the earth and get as low down as you want to, its really awesome flying over mountains, you can zoom in on your own home and see you car in the driveway. Everyone should have Googleearth, I just wish it was live camera instead of still photos.
