Nobody voted for Gordon Brown. They voted for Tony Blair who said he'd serve a full term. I think Gordon Brown should therefore have called an election and let the people decide.

I think he should have called an election - because it would give people some accountability over their elected leader. However, Brown will carry on exactly the same policies as Blair - so there is not exactly much change, is there?

Brown has, today, ruled out any chance of an election this year, because he is scared that the Tories will run him too close (in the latest opinion poll they were just ahead of Labour, especially in marginal seats).

I think that the Tories, Lib Dems and Labour are all after the "centre ground" and that there is little to choose between any of the main parties. Recent low voter turnouts in elections show that most people are disinterested in politics, because they are not represented by any of the main political parties. Only 22% of the public actually voted for Tony Blair in 2005 - (36.5% of a 61% turnout). This is hardly a mandate to govern?!

We need a new political party to address the concerns of ordinary people and not kow-tow to big business. This will reinstate public confidence in politicians. See the Campaign for a New Workers' Party (cnwp) website for details.

Actually, they voted for their individual member of Parliament. The members of Parliament choose the Prime Minister.

The resignation of Tony Blair is not the first time that the leader of the majority party has stepped down in the middle of a parliamentary term. Normally, the new Prime Minister has waited for at least a little while before calling a new election and James Callahan only called an election after losing a vote of no-confidence.
