According to recent research into brain mapping, they actually are because the regular process of 'intentional forgetting' is undermined by emotional memories, especially if they have strong visual clues.

* The physical pain is very difficult to put in one's past! The visual clues do make it impossible to fully put the painful memory behind & let it go! I have memories of physical pain that will be with me til I am no longer on this earth*

Yes painful memories are the most hardest to forget, and its really hard to deal with.

yeah, I've tried to forget some painful memories from over a decade ago and it's still not working.

I don't think we ever forget our painful memories, we might lock them away somewhere in our Psyche but a sudden reminder brings them crashing back very easily.

i would have imagined so, its hard to try and forget something and seen sa you would asways remember the bad times over the good times, you will almost never forget a really bad time!

Most definately.
And painful means when you've done things that you feel so stupid about.
I cringe when I think back about some of the things I've done and said.

They're the only ones I would want to forget and for me they're almost impossible to get rid of, it gets easier to deal with them but can't forget them!!
