Seeing the costs involved, does it still seem like a good price?

You can help by inflating the front tyres to their recommended maximum and using good quality tyres. I find Michelin and BF Goodrich give light steering.

You will find that some cars you can fit and some have no layout for it (no bolt fittings) , you would need a new power steering rack £250 clamps and shock rubbers £20 track rod ends £25 power pump £280 piping about £100 double front engine pulleys £40 belts £12 reservoir £25 labour about 5 or six hours most garages charge about £50 per hour large agency's £80 to 90 per hour that does not include minor fittings IE nuts and bolts etc

Not an easy addition...this requires braces or brackets to mount the pump to the front of the engine,a pulley & belt so the engine can turn the pump, a pressure and return hose to get the fluid to the rack & pinion, of course a rack & pinion and numerous other adjustment to the suspension on the vehicle. Now, if your car is "equipped with power steering that doesn't work", then your local repair shop or dealer for that model car can diagnose your problem and inform you of the costs to repair the power steering. Finally, there are aftermarket companies that make power steering equipment for streetrods and custom applications. They too may be able to help.

Power steering is NOT a viable retro fit.
New cars have it as standard and the only cars that don't have it
are quite old or entry level models .
It does'nt make any sense to spend a lot of money on such a car.

Complete replacement of rack and pinion.
Replacement of drive belt and some pulleys.
Instalation of power steering pump.

You could get it done for around $1000.

Sell the car you've got and go buy one with power steering already fitted.
Cheapest option.

its not as expensive as you think, depending on the car, ask your dealer or Maker's of your car, good luck and hope you get it done
