I'd like to buy/rent a porta potty unit like you see at fairs, construction sites, etc., to place in the area near my barn, so I don't have to run back to the house at such times. What do I need to know about this idea? What's the best way to obtain one? empty it? maintain it? etc., What costs, problems am I likely to encounter?

Well it's not a BAD idea, if you'r asking opinions. RENTALS are often pretty temporary and usually the discharge, etc. is taken care of by the rental company. Pretty much like the disposal of septic tank pump outs.

In essence it's like a chemical toilet for camping, but without strictly having chemicals that negate the waste. Often the fluid is blue (a Coloring) Often there may be some SCENT; but for rentals they don't consider them for long periods of time, and on a job site, are often switched out on a regular basis.

I have no clue as to cost. I let someone else worry about that.

If this is only for personal use and you are in a rural area, build a small wooden building (an outhouse) on 4x4 runners. Dig a hole in the ground and set the outhouse over it. Go and move the outhouse whenever the hole is about 1/2 to 3/4 full and cover the hole. The only cost is for the lumber for the outhouse.
