I need some opinions. I went grocery shopping at walmart yesterday. They were extremely busy. The cashier stuffed all my items in just a few bags. My husband placed the check out items in the cart while I placed the remaining items in the checkout. When I got home to get the items out of my car, all the bags were breaking because they were so overpacked. Only 2 bags didn't break. Every other one had ripped handles or holes in the bottoms. One bag had 8 canned/glass jars and it was not double bagged. That bag ripped as soon as I lifted it out of the vehicle. My cheese sauce broke. I had an extra-large sized can of spaghettio's and it fell out and landed on my toe. Today I have a big bruise and it really hurts. I also purchased 2 packs of ground beef and she placed them in one bag and stuffed one of the large sized boxes of tostinos pizza snacks on top and ripped my package of meat. It wouldn't have taken any extra time to give us more bags, but instead I spent extra time cleaning the

mess up. So I emailed walmart (my fiance works there so I didn't want to complain in the store) A managaer from the store called me today and told me to bring the meat package in and he will replace it. Didn't say sorry or mention anything about my toe. I know it sounds silly, but it really hurts. Accidents do happen, but this was carelessness on the cashiers part. He said I should have told her to give more bags, well my fiance put them in the cart, not me. I at least expected an apology, I'm not usually one to complain, but I am upset about this. What if it had been a child or an elderly person. Oh by the way I had flip flops on. So it really hurt bad. What should I do? My mother-in-law says to get an xray and push it further. I just don't know. It is very sore and bruised and they didn't apologize.

Usually, all supermarkets are very, very cooperative with you. You should have gone back the same day and got new items and complained. I do it all the time when there's a problem. Sure I know I'm wasting their time, but they wasted mine. If something is done wrong, they should be aware of the problem and help fix it.

Supermarkets are very, very competitive, they will suit your needs in reason because they don't want you going to their competitors.

What I see here is a case of whining. Seriously. I used to be a cashier in a very busy grocery store and when your body gets in the mode of going fast and you look down the line to all the pissed off people looking at you because the line is so long, you just don't think. You do. This cashier did the same exact thing.

She probably wasn't thinking about if the bags were too heavy or not. As the consumer, once you leave the doors of the store, what happens with your groceries is your own concern, not the cashiers. You said "once you got home". What happened when you took the bags out of the shopping cart and put them in your vehicle before you left the store parking lot?? Did you think they were packed properly and looked to pose no problem? If not, why didn't you go back in and request more bags?

Why on earth did you try and pick up a bag if you thought it was over packed? Why on earth didn't you attempt to take SOME items out of the bags before picking them up? But no seriously, why would you even ATTEMPT to PICK UP A BAG WITH 8 GLASS JARS that wasn't double bagged? You obviously could see that it was not double bagged. You knew the glass jars were fairly heavy..

It wouldn't have been extra time to ASK for more bags, instead you just walked out and drove away and went home to post this on this forum and complain for what? nothing.

I think the manager was in his every right to ONLY offer to exchange the meat for you because the rest is just whiney BS that you have no reason to complain about because YOU packed your car, YOUleft the store parking lot and YOU were the one to be intelligent enough to try and take overpacked bags out of your vehicle w/out making them lighter.

By the way, the fact that your little piggy toe is hurt and bruised and you're crying about it makes no difference to the store because 1 - it didn't happen on store property, so they have no liability 2- it happened at home, how does walmart know it happened by a can of spaghettios they sold you or by a can of sweet peas bought from their competitor? They wouldn't want to pay their competitors medical bills you know. 3 - you were wearing flip flops, your own problem, not theirs.

You're a woman of genius. Truly.

I once spent $400 in wal-mart, had 2 shopping carts full of merchandise, and asked the cashier to get one of the cart boys to help me push one of the carts to my car. She told me she couldn't help me. LOL. I got home, (at that time I lived 15 or so miles away),and she hadn't even put all my bags in my cart. I was missing a whole lot of stuff. I went back to the store (reciept in hand) and asked for a customer service manager. Turns out, the same cashier was a customer service manager. They called her over and she pretty much called me a liar, and told me she wouldn't replace my missing items. When she walked away I gave my phone number to the customer service clerk and told her to pass it to the general manager. By the time I got home, my phone was already ringing. He replaced my items, then gave me a $25 gift card, an apology, and an assurance that her butt would be chewed thouroughly for implying I was lying. You get exactly what you pay for with Wal-Mart. Grocery stores carry liability policies for just such incidents. Most likely, their insurance company will offer you a quick cash payout if you just contact the store. There is probably no need to sue.

If you toe hurts that much go get an xray and have it checked to see if it is broken.

Call Walmart and tell them you need to file an insurance because your toe was injured because your groceries were not properly packed by the cashier.

The go back with the receipt and have the store manager give you credit for the broken items.

What you should have done was taken pictures with your digital camera and gone to the store with them.

Then the manager would have been much nicer.

Remember pictures say a lot.

what you should have done is when you saw what they were doing to your groceries at the time of bagging was speak up they would have corrected it or your husband in this case should have the fact that they would replace your meat is beyond words since once you walk out the store they are no longer liable.

although these things happen unfortunately its happened to me and the problem is if you don't speak up that clerk will do the very same thing to someone else.

But i wouldn't boycott a store just because of one clerk if you had reported that clerk and nothing was done that would be different.

I'm not a Wal Mart shopper for many reasons, and this is one reason why. Everything they do is half azz. I agree that you should contact head quarters and file a formal complaint. I wish you had taken pictures of that big mess as proof, but I'm sure at the time you were having to deal with it and didn't think of it. But it's always a good idea to keep one of those little disposable cameras on hand at home and in the car for things like this.

Good luck with your complaint. I hope you get some type of apology and reimbursement.

im with your mother in law,get your foot x-rayed,there are a lot of small bones in the foot and one of them could be fractured or broken,if this is so,then i would sue the store.i notice that a lot of cashiers do this, its so stupid and innaine, once this young gal put a carton of eggs on top of two loafs of bread, when i got home and took the groceries out the bread was smashed.i really dont understand why people are so careless! i like to bag my own things, you cant trust a young person who is busy talking to someone and not watching what theyre doing.i say go for it!!

Ive had problems at walmart myself.
I dont know what the "best" thing to do is, but I would start by either stopping in or calling and asking to speak to a manager. Save the recipt so you can identify the date/time and cashier. Try to approach them with a calm attitude. Getting angry will not solve the problem. If the manager doesnt seem to care (as my luck had it), go to www.walmart.com and file a complaint or make a phone call to their headquarters.

Both your husband and you could have, and probably should have either asked for more bags or rebagged the items yourself. The cashier is no longer responsible once the you have placed the bags in your cart. Replacing your meat is a form of apology and you should leave it at that.

As a former assistant store manager I say bag up every item which was affected. Take them back and exchange them. Notify the store of your injury and what you plan to do. See what their response is. IF you dont like their response keep moving up the chain of command until you get a response you like. Hope it helps. Sometimes Ethics/Morality/Common Sense and Civility do not exist... so you have to demand them...
