Generally, paint jobs last anywhere from 5-10 years - while they can last long, most homes will "settle" a bit, and during the course of that, paint cracks. It just happens. If you haven't repainted in 20 years, it's time to do it. The best way is to strip the old paint, put down foundation paint, then put on at least two coats of your preferred color, maybe three for the ceiling.
