We used to do this to let a tree dry out for a year, before cutting it for fire wood. It is called "girdling" the tree. The living part of the tree trunk, the sapwood, is the newest rings underneath the bark. This is where the sap, and nutrients travel up and down the trunk of the tree. We would just cut into the trunk far enough to cut off the flow, and that kills the tree. Here is a link from the forest service to get you started reading more about it. http://www.fs.fed.us/eng/pubs/pdfpubs/pdf99242809/pdf99242809pt01.pdf

Black Walnut is a very expensive and wanted wood. I am sure you could make a deal to get it cut down and make money at the same time.

Walnut wood is very expensive. Try to find a logger in your area they will probably cut it down for free and maybe even pay you for it. If you kill it it will rot and be worthless.

Let me guess--like on the property line--on the other property??? You might be asking for trouble. Don't know if lots of gasoline would do it or not--but it would kill the grass. Try looking in Lowes or some such store--maybe you can find something or some ideas.
