There are a lot of people who use self-talk to handle what is going on inside their minds. When self-talk is not monitored cautiously it can lead to drastic effects not only on one’s personality but also affects its mentality and psychology. Self-talk is a type of conversation which we conduct with ourselves. In literature we call it soliloquy. Brain’s reticular activating system never forgets what we repeat again and again. Ironically this system can not recognize what is beneficial to the individual and what is not. Think you can, think you can't; either way, you'll be right- a saying goes like this. Therefore when ever we ‘talk’ with ourselves, we should be cautious, very cautious in fact. There are a lot of audio programs which can help and there are a lot of online books. If I recall there is a book ‘self-talk solutions’ which is every effective in this scenario.

The spiritual understanding or interpretation comes after the ailment is developed. That doesn't make it any less important, it's just the order of things ;) Stress can cause illness. Those who feel they have spiritual peace aren't usually very stressed. So that would be a direct connection between spiritual health and physical health. Perhaps not the one you're after, but still... You're asking why things happen, or perhaps why they happen in that order. And the answer to that is all around you. Whatever is, is the cause of everything else that is. That's how complicated our Universe is. Andrew H's answer is also correct, but you may want more information, like what regulates parasites, bacteria and viruses, then what regulates the regulators, and so on. Nightowl's answer is also correct, but you may like to ask what regulates DNA...etc. If you do, you'll just go round in circles, because everything is connected, it's all a part of the same system. Take anything out and the system will change or perhaps even fall apart. This can be seen from the already discovered connections between seemingly disconnected objects and situations. So when you imagine how many connections we are yet to find, you may start to understand what I' getting at with everything being the cause of everything else, at least indirectly. The mind does heal the body, it's what regulates the healing and immune systems. Conscious control over that regulation should also be possible and is if you believe reports. The placebo effect is also an indication of some form of conscious control, because trust is a conscious decision. And the placebo effect doesn't work if the patient doesn't trust the medical professional.
