I need to read some books with strong women as the character the story focuses on. They need to be competent and smart, and not emotionally weak. Romance is fine, as long as the girl really does kick @ss, which will probably only be found in more modern works. If it is romance, it needs action in there as well (like Tara Janzen's "Crazy" series). For any other genre, action is also a must. Fantasy, even sci-fi if it's really outstanding, and anything in between. If the lady is edgy, even better. Even if the character is unrealistic, this is the kind of thing I'm looking to read right now. Any suggestions?
Thanks! :)

I've already read Maximum Ride and both Green Rider novels. :/
I'm looking for something written for a little older audience - those both fall under mainly YA.
Thanks for the suggestions, though. :)

Many of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover novels have strong women. My favorite is Shattered Chain. Sherri Tepper also is a great writer with strong women. Jane Yolen is another one.
Esther Friesner just did a fictionalized biography on Helen of Troy that is outstanding as well.

Green Rider by Kristen Britain
It's about a young woman who runs away from school. She meets a dying messenger on the road and agrees to deliver his message to the king. She discovers that the message is being sought by some sinister characters who are now following her. She is forced to think on her toes and defend herself. It's very exciting. There is a sequel called First Rider's Call. A third book is to be released in November, I think, called The High King's Tomb.

You could give Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich a try. Sue Grafton writes the alphabet books..A is for. Her central character is Kinsey Milhone, a private investigator who has personal issues, and an attraction to they wrong kind of man. They are well written and at times funny, as well as on the edge of your seat, page turners. Janet Evanovich's main character is Stephanie Plum who is a major screw up. She takes on the job of Bounty Hunter and manages somehow to survive despite her cars blowing up and many attempts to do her in. The stories are funny, and entertaining, as well as hard to put down. You may also like Nora Roberts sci fi cop Eve Dallas. She writes under the name of JD Robb.

Did u mean strong women as physically strong?
I dont read that sort of books, however i like to read about women full of strong will. And I prefer Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen as the character Ms. Elizabeth Bennet is a strong will, full of determination and so much accomplished to her own thinking and witty.
She defends her principal, stands up for her sister, re-evaluates her error, and speaks up her mind.
Although this is a very old English literature, it is a good read and I enjoy it very much. I have re-read it many times. The story is realistic and still in tandem in today's situation.
If you want to enjoy watching it, pick the BBC's Pride & Prejudice version. Colin Firth is awesome as Mr. Darcy.

"Tinker" by Wen Spencer (sci fi);
"Bloody Jack" by Louis A. Meyer (this is YA, but historical with some adult topics - and a very strong positive female character who definitely kicks @ss, and certainly edgy in this context)
"Sunshine" by Robin McKinley - the character is conflicted, doesn't think of herself as strong, but she is one tough cookie (hee hee - character is a baker) (seriously, one of my favorite books) (SF)
Any heroine of one of the Tamora Pierce books (YA though);
Hope this helps.
