You can't even compare Jacksonville to Miami or Orlando. The biggest attraction is the beaches. Its very family oriented and boring. College football (U of FL) is popular but most Jax residents I have met say how big NFL is here, but its just not the case. They black out the games on TV cause they cant sell enough tickets!! Fly over jacksonville and meet up in Miami. This place is a hole.

Well, in your addendum you described two things about Phoenix that will be either familiar or an improvement. Phoenix, like Jacksonville, is a sprawling town that requires driving. Unfortunate, and they're working on it - light rail is on its way - but there it is. So you'd be used to that. However, it's a smaller land mass than Jacksonville, so the traffic is a bit better. And, if you can't stand humidity, you'll like Phoenix, because as you pointed out, there's little humidity. They are different cities, no question. Jacksonville is lush and Phoenix is a desert. But I think you'd find in terms of the culture, sports environment, things to do, the "type" of city, that it won't seem totally unfamiliar. You'd adjust quickly. Also, there is one further advantage of Phoenix you might want to consider, and that's the surroundings. Florida is basically a swamp in every direction from Jacksonville. Drive two hours from the sunny desert of Phoenix in the winter, and you'll find yourself in the pine forests of Flagstaff, surrounded by snow.

Nothing, really. Unless you like Football... because we are obsessed with our NFL team here and we host the largest outdoor cocktail party (UF vs Georgia).
As far as nightlife is concerned, the city is dead after 2 AM. Downtown as a couple nice things to do like MOSH and the San Marco district. But most people like to go to the beaches, which has much more nightlife and has a better young and single crowd.
I find the city boring really... there isnt as much to do here as in Miami and Orlando. And compared to those two cities, Jax is much more "Southern" (think country/hick people.. although we have a decent amount of hispanics). Most everyone speaks english and the political atmosphere here is conservative.
So yeah.. go to the beach or do watersports (popular here) or watch the game or something. If I didnt live here I probably wouldnt consider Jacksonville, FL as a vacation spot I would spend money on.

If you like football and history, you're in good shape. It has prominent teams in NCAA and NFL, and the 1st permanent European settlement in North America is next to there at St. Augustine. (Neat tours of the Spanish Mission and other places.) There's more English spoken there than in Miami.

Why not fly out to Jacksonville, FL and book a cruise for 2. This way you will be on common waters and not at his place. There is so much to do on a cruise its like a little city on water. There are shows like on Broadway, casino, clubs the pools, bands you name it its there and the best part is the dinning. Cruises are all-inclusive so you pay one low price for everything.
This will give you and your guy a a chance to get to know each other instead of worrying about who will pay.
5 Day Bahamas from Jacksonville, FL
