You really do need 10 mm cable to take account of the voltage drop at that current, especially if it's a long run. You need a 50A miniature circuit breaker which ideally should be the first position next to the main switch on the consumer unit. This will help to prevent the lights etc dimming when the shower is turned on.

Michael B is right, sorry but 6mm is no big enough, you need 10mm.
