Algebra and Geometry are both mathematical systems based on definitions, axioms (accepted ideas) and theorems (ideas you prove are logical consequences of the definitions and axioms). The axioms of algebra are easy to memorize without giving them much thought: adding the same number to both sides of an equation does not change the solution; if a=b, and b=c, then a=c, etc. When you solve equations you are using these axioms without realizing it.

Geometry has far more definitions: what is a line, triangle, trapezoid, congruent triangles, etc. If you don't take the time to learn the definitions thourghly you will never know what you are talking about. The axioms of geometry are also different and must be memorized, toyed with in diagrams, etc., until they are second nature to you. When you start to provew theorems in geometry you must begin with the given information and put it together in a logical order using definitions and axioms until you have given an argument that convinces you and everyone else that you have proved the theorem.

Think of yourself as the prosecuting attorney in the court room. You are claiming someone is guilty. You present the evidence (the given geometric facts) and you reason with them (using axioms, and definitions) with logic until you have convinced the jury of the guilt of the accused.

In beginning algebra you learn to sovle equations and simple word problems. In geometry you learn how to use logic to draw conclusions from evidence. That is, you learn to think critically. Both are important for the developement of your reasoning powers and will make other subjects easier.

They're very different, but there is some Algebra in Geometry. I got an A in Algebra and F in Geometry..go figure. Just try hard and ask the teacher for help.

Algebra seems to purely be of numbers, Geometry with shapes.. maybe you're having trouble understand that aspect since there is a huge difference in so many areas in geometry, and some really tiny differences that you can get confused in.

I'm just the opposite of that. I find geometry simple and doesn't have erroneous answers and stuff like that. With algebra I have to check my answer and crap to see which solutions work and which don't. I really dont know what you find so hard about geometry (I got from a B to a F in algebra 2 years ago, I got A in geometry and now I'm stuggling with a D in trig)

I believe the problem is that you liked Algebra and thought it fun and interesting. But for some reason, you do not like Geometry, do not see its value, and appreciate its wonderful logic. To be able to prove something beyond any possible dispute is a wonderful thing. Euclid's Elements, written around 300 BC, is a remarkable treatise. Find it on the internet and marvel. I think as a result you will come to like Geometry and predict your grade will improve dramatically.

Good Reading.

1. You might understand one subject better than another. It's just the way your brain works.

2. Your teacher might not be effective at teaching. A teacher can really make or break a class. In college I took a class that I got a "D" in. I thought it was really hard and I hated it. I had to retake it, and it ended up being one of my favorite classes, and I LOVED it. The teacher was really awesome and made the class fun, and the learning easy.

You can try to ask the teacher for help, but if the teacher isn't really good, ask a friend!

Algebra is more straightforward- solving equations. Geometry is basically all practical puzzles- you have to figure out the components of your own equations before you can even begin to solve them. That compounds the chance for error.

oftentimes, people who excell at algebra strugle more with geometry, but some people who have more trouble with algebra do a lot better in geometry. it just depends on how your brain works.

I had the same problem but opposite and it seems to me that a lot of people can only really GET one or the other, my mom, my bro, and my boyfriend all say the same thing.

Its just how your brain works
