Until technology puts an automatic on a par with the manual for fuel consumption, I'd chose a manual. Additionally, it is mechanically simpler and cheaper to service. You also have better control of the car on the road during adverse weather.

City driving, automatic. I don't want my left leg twice the size of my right. Off road and highway, manual, better control of the power of the engine.

I learned on stick, and drove that for a few years before getting my automatic. The stick really stunk in traffic (on the Tappanzee bridge for 5 hours at Thanksgiving was especially brutal... my knee was messed up for days), but when there was no traffic it was really cool to feel so connected to driving. It was like the car was your partner. I live in the city now, so I almost have to have automatic. Too much stop and go.

Give me the slushbox, I drive in town alot and off road so the auto is better all around for me. Sticks are loads of fun too.
