2005 Chevrolet Colorado. its only happened twice. it turns over but doesnt start, then i will try it again and take my hand off the key and its still trying to start. then after 10 to 30 mins. it starts up and runs great like nothing ever happened.

The starter continuing to crank is normal on this model. The starter circuit is computer controlled. The problem is that it fails to start. Knowing these models the first place I would look is fuel pressure. They need 55psi minimum to start. If pressure is ok after that check for spark.

You may have a problem with your ignition switch having an open circuit. The switch and/or lock cylinder may be sensing that the key has remained turned to the start position. I would lean more toward the ignition switch having an open circuit, but you should get this diagnosed. Alot of the 2002+ GM models are having ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch, and passkey sensor problems right now.

The starter solenoid switch contacts get burned and welded together due to the 150 Amps of current that flow through them, just like an arc welder welds metal together. The ignition switch it's self is actually on the steering column above the brake pedal.

The key assembly is actually just a locking mechanism that pushes a long rod that is the length of the steering column down to the slide switch.

If when you turn the key to the "start" position does it seem fairly difficult? Like it's binding on something?

If, when you let go of the key, does it remain in the "start" position briefly?

If the answer to the above questions is no, then you need to replace your starter.
If the answer is "YES" to any of the questions, you could have a bad key lock assembly, bent ignition rod along the steering column, or a broken or dirty return spring in the switch.

one of your problems is the starter spring[ abendics] is sticking, this is why it continues to turn over once you remove
your hand from the key,this may also be the reason it doesnt start..
