Yes, I believe that it is. Prehaps just a by-product, but a reasonable barometer nonetheless.
I have always believed that television commercials, (rather than the programs themselves), also could tell you a lot about a culture or movements in society.
What people buy, what they wear, how they speak, what is important can all be found there.
BUT! One word of warning:
Just because it seems that you feel like you recognize where society is going or where it's been from television or clothing designers, remember, that world isn't real. It is a reflection of needs and desires of the advertisers and designers themselves. Like the moon reflected in a pond is not the moon. It can also be a means of controling the observers feelings and actions - even at a later date, ("I saw that somewhere...").
