Just take the measurements to the carpet store and they will take care of you. Also, check around for remnants. It could be possible that someone would have pieces you could use that would save lots of money. If you could find an installer that had a leftover cut of about 5 ft wide, that would be perfect.
To buy carpet to cover that area, if you can, use a non directional cut and just buy a 9 by 12 piece and cut it in half and seam it.

Lots of good answers, but how wide is it in not just the hallway, but into the doorway of the hall area. Most carpet seams meet in the middle of the doorway. If the door is closed you should see the right color from the hallway, or the other room on the other side of the doorway as well. For instance hall carpet may be blue and the bedroom carpet may be green, these two colors should meet under the door when closed. Be sure you have taken that into consideration when giving the dimensions to the carpet people. By the way, most installers measure for free.

(22/3) x (4.5/3) = 7.33 x 1.5 = 11 square yards

But!!! If the carpet has a directional pattern and needs to be 4ft 6 wide, then you need to look at how many widths you can get out of the roll. eg. if the roll of carpet is 12ft wide you will only get 2 runs out of it (9ft) so you will need to by 11ft (2x11=22). In that case you will have to pay for 12ft x 11ft = (12/3) x (11/3) = 4 x 3.67 = approx 15 square yards.

If it's plain you can cut it the other way so from a 12ft wide carpet you can get a 9ft piece and halve it, then it's 12 square yards.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Whenever you purchase carpet you need to add wastage of 10% minimum. Carpet measurements tend to be metric most common is a 4000mm width so you will need two lengths if the carpet is cut from the width These lengths allowing for waste should be max 5 ft which is close to 1500mm.
Id buy 4m x 3m.
Alternatively they may have remnants in the full length you need it worth looking in a few shops to see whats around

Its best to measure by square metres as most shops advertise their prices in this manner. 22 foot long = 6.70 metres, 4ft 6 = 1.5 metres.

Carpet comes as 4 metres or 5 metres width, so if you were to order 4 m x 6.70 metres you would have 2.5m x 6.70 metres waste.

The most cost effective method would be to order half the amount 3.5 metres length x 4 metres, Cut the carpet in half and join the carpet half way in the hall.

If you take those measurements with you, they will be able to convert it for you.

A word of warning - unless you have fitted a carpet before, pay the £35 to get a proper fitter. You simply won't get the professional finish, however hard you try. And a lump in the carpet, or bits not tucked under the skirting properly will spoil that brand new look. I know. Personal experience with a dad and father in law who are insistent DIYers.

Carpet is sold in standard 12, 13, 13.5 (mobile homes), and 15ft widths.

You can also buy it in custom widths for runners.

If you buy a standard size, then you are most likely going to need to have it seamed... so buy a bit extra to match any pattern in the carpet.

Take your measurements down to the carpet store and let them know what you are looking for... I'd advise getting prices from at least 3, including labor.

As there are 3 feet in a yard...

That's 7 and 1/3 times 1 and 1/2 yards ...

You need 11sq yards (but ask for 22ft x 4ft 6...)

Since most carpet is sold at 12 ft wide. (4 yds) you should probably buy a 12 ft x 9 ft piece, which would allow for NO error. That equates to 12 sq. yds. Then cut it precisely along the 12 ft. length, in half.
