If you like cello, you should purchase some of the CDs put out with Yo Yo Ma, the top cello virtuoso in the world who doesn't fool around with stupid or dull pieces.

For modernist or Neo-Classical, I would recommend my own piano/cello duet the Caprice in Eb Major(minor) or the 2nd movement of my Piano Concerto in F Major which virtually qualifies as a double concerto. The extremely dark and sad cello and contrabass which often are juxtaposed like a duet is a stand out for lovers of the string instrument group especially the lower register ones: cello, contrabass.

The film of Steinbeck's Witches of Eastwick with Cher, and Jack Nicholson playing "Daryl Van Horn" has an excellent cello/piano duet and Daryl Van Horn's commentary on playing is well worth noting. "Your fingering is perfect but your bowing sucks".

But really, all he was saying is what I tell some of my piano students "Mistakes are forgivable, but playing without passion is the unpardonable sin in music. If you don't feel passionately about a piece, don't even try to play it!"

The only one I can think of offhand is Elgar's Cello Concerto, which is quite beautiful.
