My son's cord came off when he was 6 days old, the day it came off it went very very smelly and was discharging puss and blood, I was worried it was infected but it came off that evening and the smell went instantly. The scab will take about a month to heal.

With my 3 daughters it varied so much, one took 4 days, one took 2 weeks, and one took 3 1/2. With the 3 1/2 weeker I was so worried but the doc reassured me that as long as it was clean it was fine. He said some babies cord stumps take 7 weeks to fall off! I started alternating 91% alcohol and hydrogen peroxide at the drs advice and it fell off 2 days after that! Ask your doc for some helpful hints!

The quickest was my third - we tied her ourselves with waxed thread and covered it in honey - it was gone and healed within a few days.

My 2nd was similar we tied his ourselves with gut string and covered his in honey - the midwife came and put a plastic clip on 2 days later - it got caught in his nappy and bled so another midwife took it off at my request and it healed quickly then.

Different cultures have different ways of dealing with it - one tribe leave it all attached with the placenta, the mother goes off to a special place and stays there with her baby til it drops off naturally - apparently the longest time ever was 4 weeks!

I even have 3 new born kittens and mum doesnt seem after them. I even have been looking after them for the final 30 hours. They consume plenty for their length. One has lost the umbilical twine and the others will loose it quickly too. Does that advise they seem to be a pair of million week previous, their eyes are no longer open yet.

It varies.
With my son I used the rubbing alcohal on it daily like I was told and it took 17 days for it to fall off.
With my daughter I didnt use the alcohal and it fell off after 8 days.
