I was supplied an ethernet cable by my ISP to connect my dsl modem to my computer. Over the years it's gotten old and it needs to be replaced. I'm out looking online for an ethernet cable but I never thought it would be so difficult. What do I need cat5 or cat6? which is best, with gold or without?

Besides what i need, im intrigued, what are the different types of cables used for? anything specific, any better?

HA HA HA. You know I asked myself the same question when I saw the Cat6 cable. Just letting you know either will work with either conductors. Cat5 and Cat6 are basically the same thing except Cat6 can transfer data a little faster with fewer corruptions from cross over signal impedance. Meaning Data gets there clearer. Honestly you personally will never see the difference between either cable. The Cat6 cables are generally used overseas where internet bandwidth isn't monopolized by the government and are further advanced. With the slow, in comparative to foreign internet speeds, speeds america has the Cat6 cable will not show you any faster speeds. It will speed up the data transmission from your modem to your computer however the speeds from your ISP to your modem will remain the same. So its just a corporate way to make more money. My advice... Just stick with the cheapest Cat5 cable you can find. I promise you it will be ok. Hope this helped.

Cable color is cosmetic. On each cable there is a confusing hodgepodge of words and numbers, but what you are looking for is CAT or CATEGORY 5 or 5E or 6. When you see that it means the cable is the kind that is designed for Ethernet traffic (and other stuff). One word of warning: There is a special version of an Ethernet cable known as a CROSSTALK cable. It SHOULD be labeled as such, but sometimes it isn't. You'll not hurt anything if it is and you use it, it just won't work. BTW it's used to hookup two computers to each other directly.

Visit you local computer specialty store like Altex Computers. If you don't have one, then Circuit City or Best Buy.

Gold conductors are considered the best, as far as which one you need, take the old one with you and compare......
