The main reason to the occourance of tides is the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun. But the moon has a greater effect on the ocean tides.
Water level of the sea in the side of the moon rises. Then it has high tides. The side opposite to the moon has also hightides to maintain the balance. There is low tides in the other sides of the earth.
In full moon days and new moon days spring tides occour. When the sun and the moon occour in one side of the earth, both their attractions cause the ocean water to rise higher than usual. When the sun and the moon are situated at the right angles to the earth tides also occour. This happens during the first and the third quarters of moon. And it is named as neap tide.
