To find out if the Greek restaurant is authentic Greek, check the owner's credentials, as many Greek restaurants do not serve true Greek food. Some Greek restaurants are owned by Greek natives.
Make sure that the staple main dish, the gyros, are served with thick portions of lamb and beef topped with a nice cucumber dill sauce, not having the thin pieces of meat like typical mall gyro stores have. Make sure they offer baklava, saganaki which is fried kasseri cheese served au flambe, and Greek salad with unpitted olives and good serving of feta cheese on top of it. Dolmades (stuffed cabbage) is another good indicator of authentic Greek food.
Now as to wanting to check out their menu, don't be shy to ask, tell them you are curious about the restaurant and would like to see what they offer. After all, if the owner or staff of the restaurant really want your service, they should be happy to provide you with a menu and/or if any, a carry-out menu to take home to look over.
Don't be surprised if they offer some American food, like hamburger and chicken gyros, many Greek resturants do that to accomodate those shy of trying out Greek food.

the Greeks traditionally take their time on a similar time as eating, extra of a social gathering than a meal. Starters tend to be interior the form of dips served with pitta or sparkling bread: Tzatziki - yogurt and cucumber houmos - chick pea, garlic and olive oil Taramasalata - fish roe, beetroot important classes could nicely be lamb, fish or meat based as stated in previous posts; Stefado, Moussaka, Kleftico etc. while you're uncertain then you definately can attempt a Meze that's small plates of diverse selections. many times the eating place asks for a minimum sort of persons for this meal. cakes are super: Baklava - honey and phylo pastry Loukoumathes - cinnamon and honey i'm hoping this helps.....have an excellent night.

Try looking at this website for some ideas about greek food
http://www.foodgreek.com/
You will probably have eaten some of the dishes without realising it and others are very similar to italian or turkish food. I do like souvlaki which is really just a pork kebab and also swordfish steaks. Go ahead and try the restaurant, I am sure that the owner will be eager to help you uot and decsribe the dishes for you.

Have you heard of a gyro? It's chopped and formed lamb, or combo of lamb and beef I believe, that has been seasoned. They serve it on pita bread with lettuce, tomato, and Tzatziki (or spelled tzadziki or tsatsiki) sauce which is plain yogurt with cucumber, garlic, olive oil, salt, vinegar, dill, parsley or mint. (SO GOOD!)
That's only one type of food that they serve. It's mediterranean food... olive oils, kalamata olives, feta cheese, earthy yummy foods. Hummus is served there, too (a yummy bean dip type dish that you use pita bread to scoop up and eat).
Saganaki is a flaming cheese dish that is also very yummy.
Do try the restaurant. If nothing else, tell your server this is your first experience with Greek food and ask them for suggestions. All the above dishes are really mild and are not spicy or too strongly flavored.
Try it! :) I really think you'll like it

most restaurants should have their menu displayed outside the front of the establishment and so avoid that scenario but you can expect lots of good choice to cater for the average palate. they have a Mezze (check spelling) that is just loads of courses of all kinds of foods that you should get on with at least some of it although this sometimes needs pre-ordering.
mousaka is a common greek dish which I think of as a bit like shepards pie with aubergines, (egg plant) with a tomatoey twist. ooh, you're making me hungry.

They serve a lamb sandwich on a thin pita bread that is called a gyro that is excellent. Also a pastry known as baklava that is pretty tasty. Also salads with black olives, fetta cheese and the like.

It is SOOO Good!! If you like lamb, they make it so tender. Fried Calamari, nice fresh Feta cheese salad, or fish they also do very well. They make rice good, too...or Greek potatoes..i.e. lemon and butter and maybe some oregano.
Tzatziki sauce is a cucmber, yougurt and dill sauce usually served with lamb or chicken...very good!
Try the place, you might like it!
