Because the majority of people now a days are sick and demented and kill people.
I do sometimes pick them up if I am alone but I am able to defend myself just fine while driving.
I never do it when my family is in the car though unless its bad weather and a child is involved.

I used to hitch all the time. Was groped once and scared several times. But I no longer hitch hike or pick them up. It's far too dangerous.

Because things were a lot more easy-going back then. Now everyone that hitch-hikes is an axe murderer.

In the first place, it is against the law where I live and secondly, it is too dangerous. It used to be common practice. It is sad the way the world has become.

People still pick them up,I recently just hitchhiked from Ohio to North Carolina,and back

On my driving route there is actually a sign saying "correctional facility ahead, do not pick up hitchhikers". There's one reason.
