Is it possible to make a direct cable connection between an ancient windows 95 computer and hook it up to a windows xp via parallel cable? The old windows 95 computer has information I want to store on my newer windows xp home so I can burn it on a cd and finally throw that junk out.

Alternatively, I've tried pulling out my newer hard drive and placing my older windows 95 hard drive into the newer tower but it doesn't seem to do well...it only asks me to restart (im not computer sauvy).

Anyone know how I would hook these two up so i can get the info on my windows xp comp?

The windows 95 computer has no USB, Ethernet, firewire, infrared, cd/dvd-burner, built in 1996. so it must be by parallel link (or serial but i chose parallel).

You can get a copy of PC Anywhere or LapLink. The one I bought came with a parrallel cable. I think you can even just buy the cables (check CompUSA, Best Buy, Buy.com etc) But you do need software on the 95 box to allow you to connect, nothing was "native" to it for this.

PC Anywhere will work as will several other packages of the same type.

LapLink even has PC Mover software to move everything automatically for you and it does work!

so you can see these do support parallel cables.

If the Win 95 computer has an Ethernet port (Network port) I would use a crossover cable if you do not plan to keep the Win 95 computer. You can pick one up at Walmart for around $10 and the transfer of data will be much quicker than with a parallel cable.
The following link will explain it for you. The first link is a web view.

Easiest way to help you with this is to go to help and support on WinXP and in the index search for "parallel cable connection." That should give you results containing the steps to connect the two PCs via the parallel cable.
