Weed and Feed products need certain conditions in order to be effective. If you are sure of these conditions, this is a very effective tool. If you are not sure, or if your timing is wrong, the product will not work as it was designed. Make sure that:
Contact with weed leaves is good. Don't mow just before applying--instead, mow it a few days beforehand. This stimulates weed growth.
The problem weeds are broadleaf weeds. Grassy weeds, like crabgrass and dallisgrass, require different products.
The problem weeds are young and actively growing. Mature weed plants are just gonna laugh at you.
Rainfall or irrigation won´t wash the herbicide off of the leaf. Don´t water after applying broadleaf weed control products, and don´t apply them if there is a chance of rain in the forecast.
The temperature is right. Average daily temperatures should be above 70 but below 85. The best time to apply a weed and feed product is in early spring, after the danger of frost but before the weeds have matured.

The huge problem with applying weed and feed is that it gets washed off! I would skip the weed, and apply the feed when it isn't going to rain anytime soon (I live in a Mediterranean climate, and that's easy to gauge!). It gets washed off if it rains a lot or you overwater, and it's just a big waste of time and money. Anywho, your best guess is to read the instructions.

waste of time and money.... weed and feed is to kill GROWING weeds, which they're not doing now, and to feed GROWING grass , same deal.... get a winterizer type feed(which will keep the roots happy, which is all that matters in this season) and don't 'weed' anything till spring.... then use a pre-emergent herbicide type early on and a broadleaf if you miss any, later......

It's best to use in early spring that way you can rid your lawn of weeds early on and at the same time fertlize it.
You can also do it again (talking feed & weed here) in mid summer and early fall.
If you live where temps are consistently below 32 degrees f. Then I would skip winter weed and feed.

My dad lived in Virginia, and he always applied it in September, October, and December. He said SOD was an easy way to remember it, and his grass always looked nice. Myself, I had a weed problem so I applied it in the spring and fall. They have Winterizer Weed & Feed. It helps the grass grow strong roots to help it through the winter.
