NO, actualy uses less, the newer ones only use 2 gal of water per cycle, if you fill a double sink to do dishes you will use as twice as much water,

Actually they use less water than doing by hand. Today's dishwashers (as well as most appliances) are more energy efficient. I don't have to keep my water heater on as high a temperature because the dishwasher has a setting that heats only the water it uses. And only run it when it has a full load.

I'm a bachelor, so in my case if you do dishes like I do, then the answer is yes they do. I don't change the wash water in the sink as long as it is still wet.
However if you are one of those conscientious people who change the water, when it is dirty, the dishwashers are far more efficient and sanitary too. Call Sears, they have people who will give you all the answers you need.
