I just found out that Diovan and Verapomil can can insomnia ..which is WHAT I HAVE !!!!! DRat!! At least I found the culprit!! But what now? Do ALL BP meds cause insomnia? (I'm going to dr. on Mon..hope he can change it ) Any idea of others (not the ones that cause "alzheimer"symptoms ..with that suffix on the end) can't remember the name. (OH NO!! lol)

PS That suffix one is "statins"..stay away from them!! I got "lost" driving one time because of them...and others on line did too.

Yep I do and yep I have exactly the same problem. If you must take those ones set your alarm to 7 or 8 am in the morning and take them them. By bedtime the effect will be weakened.
I'm on norvasc which is a calcium channel blocker and unfortunately insomnia is one of the side effects. I also take avapro HCT which is a combination angiotension11 and diuretic. I seem to be able to tolerate that one.
Different BP meds cause different things.

ACE Inhibitors cause a tickly dry cough that can make you retch.

Angiotension 11 antagonist receptors are similar to ACE Inhibitors but the effects are usually milder.

Calcium Channel Blockers cause insomnia and postural hypotension (dizziness on standing) migraines and nausea.
(see my 360 about my recent problem)

Beta Blockers can give you the impression your skin is crawling.

Diuretics can deplete your levels of potassium.

Most of them can cause stomach upset.

How do I know all this. Because all these things happened to me. Very unpleasant indeed.
If you are not happy see your dr and ask for something else. You may need to see a specialist.

I take Atenolol for BP - chose that one because it has the side-effect of reducing the incidence of migraine headache. It has been brilliant - I've gone from 1-2 migraines per week, to 1-2 per month. I've got my life back.
I've also been taking Atorvastatin for some years for cholesterol, and don't have any memory problems.
I guess side-effects are an individual thing - what causes a problem for some, may not for others. Just see your Doc, he/she can give you something that does the job without the unwanted side effects. Good luck !

I take 5 mg Zestril for my BP. My doc wants to up it to 10 mg but I am holding out. Mine does not cause insomnia. I am fighting him on taking statins too. My results showed that I did excellent on the stress test, my carotids were clean as a whistle, and so was the coronary artery. My good cholesterol was excellent (even if my bad was not) so, don't want anymore drugs if I can help it. Thanks for the info about the other drugs.

Yes, I am on Ramipril, Bendrofluethiazide and Felodipine, I too have problems sleeping, I just assumed it was the stress I've had causing it, but will look into this that may be the problem.... thanks for this question, very helpful

Also like to add, Jilly said about diuretics causing low potassium, I get cramp a lot too......now theres a dilema, we are not supposed to have much salt with BP and one of the tablets I'm on is a diuretic so what can I do about the cramp.....it's a right game isn't it...lol

I take toprol xl and it makes me tired rather than causing lack of sleep. Linsopril made me very tired. I suffer from too high a potassium count. So have taken many healthy desirable things out of my diet to keep the potssium low. Good luck in finding the correct BP med for you.

Topral, Benicar with HCTZ, Crestor, Tiazac,

I have been on these for several years and cant change even if they give me side effects because my bp is uncontrolled, now controlled.

I have had imsomnia for about 10 years or so cant contribute these meds to insomnia.

Glad you are doing an inventory and research on your meds.

I take a statin drug with absolutely NO side effects....simvastatin...the generic form of Zicor...and also once took Lipitor, again with no side effects - statins are usually used for cholesterol, not hypertension.

For hypertension I take lisinopryl...no probs whatsoever.

Hope you find something that lets you sleep :-)
