I uses to own an E reg toyota corolla and it was by far the best car i ever owned. It cost me £325 and it lasted two years. I only lifted the bonnet when the oil light came on and it might still be with us today if somebody had not tried to steal it. Great car. Why not go to parkers cars in google. They give actual owners reveiws and an idea of what you should pay, mpg, ins group etc.

I don't know that much about cars but I do know that I frequently drive a chevrolet cavalier...they r small, excellent on gas milage ($20-35 to fill it up) I've driven it for 2 years and it was the car I learned how to drive in. It has never gave me any serious problems has lasted in over four wisconsin winters. And they can be really inexpensive ($1500 and up).

Vauxhall Astra under 1500cc. I have a 1400cc 16v, cheap to buy, cheap to run tax and insurance wise and fairly economical on fuel. Goes well to, but that would depend upon the condition. it's a 4 door too so can also be used as an emergency 2nd family car.

Go for any of the small hatchbacks from the big car (Ford, GM, Toyota or VW) manufactuers they are all fairly good. If you want economy stick to an engine size of 1.2ltr - 1.4ltr max if petrol. If you could afford it a diesel would be better.

I drive a Renault Clio 1.5 DCi 80. Despite the cost of diesel being a little higher than petrol, it is a very economical car. And would you believe, it costs only £35.00 per annum to tax. Not bad eh! :)

How about a Fiat Punto, they're are very nippy (can easily do over 90 on motorway) and they're good on fuel.
