India (Hindi: भारत Bhārat;), officially the Republic of India (Hindi: भारत गणराज्य Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a sovereign country.
The name India (IPA: /'ɪndiə/) is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River.The ancient Greeks referred to the ancient Indians as Indoi, the people of the Indus. The Constitution of India and common usage in various Indian languages also recognise Bharat as an official name of equal status.Hindustan (/hin̪d̪ust̪ɑːn/ (info)), which is the Persian word for “Land of the Hindus”

The Bharat has many meaning(Not the only Ram's Brother). That name is historical. The names are as under:
Bhārata भारत ("descended from Bharata") may refer to:

* a name of Agni
* a rishi (the author of RV 5.27, RV 3.23)
* the Bhāratas, a Rigvedic tribe
* an early epic forming the core of the Mahabharata (comprising about a quarter of the extended epic)
* Bhāratavarsha, "king Bharata's realm" i.e. India.
* the Republic of India (properly, Bhārata Gaṇarājya भारत गणराज्य)
* Bharat merino, a breed of sheep.

1) no one outside the country knows how to pronounce the BH combination. 2) the name India is well established and recognized all over the world. Bharat either means nothing or puts people into thinking about loathsome rodents. 3) There are dozens of languages in the country, and using Bharat would favor just a couple. English has the advantages of being internally neutral to all sections of the country, and externally is the most widely understood language on the planet, providing considerable advantages for trade and education. No need to translate textbooks.

Bharat or Ram's brother Bharat- almost pronoucing same. It is derived from Sanskrit- which is mother of all Indian languages. But the Britishers when came here, they had almost no knowledge about our epics or language. But they knew about Indus. Indus by pronounced turned to India. like Chuchura to Chinsura.

Bharat in Hindi because hindi is our national language, and we are proud of it. And India in english because we indians have in us to change with the time.English on the other hand has become an international language.
TO represent "BHARAT" worldwide we call it " INDIA" And i am sure we are proud with both the names and i guess its one of a country with two names. thanx.

This is true of lots of other countries. It is the usage that makes the name stick.

If you go to library and pick up a guide by Qutmutia, for any level history of India(ancient history and culture, you will find various names of India).

Not to mansion Hindustan, Hind, ----, that are in use.

China and Chin is just other example.

Indian states were all kingdoms (countries) and they have more then one name too, just because the country officially call itself different does not erase immediately it previous name.

You will find.
AriyaVarta.
Ajnaba.
-------. SSC Guide lists about 9 names, that India had, Bharat is one of the many ancient name. It is more in use internally because of the Ma ha Bharat Katha(stories,epics) , and Bhart (brother of Ram and his devotion to Ram in Ramayana Katha).

French people do not call their country France in French language.

French call Engaland, Engle in french.
