As others here have said, part of it is the "more more, faster faster" trend with technology, first of the computing sort, then of the cell-phone sort.

But I'd also like to point out that this has been going on *way* before cell-phones and the internet.

Our attention spans were already being chopped up, sliced and diced, by television and commercials. These days, it's pretty bad too, on average, an "hour's worth" of programming only has some 32 minutes of show, the rest of it is commercials and spam.

Meaning? You can't really *watch* anything, not even the news, anymore for more than five minutes without *somebody* having a damn commercial go off at the highest volume allowed under the law, totally derailing your train of thought just to get you to "buy stuff now."

And the sad truth is....we put up with it. We do because the TV is considered a "freebie" (nevermind that cable and Dish providers find ways to make you pay), and the interruptions are engineered to be brief and total non-sequiturs. They are designed to be *nonsense* relative to the programming usually.

Which is, in reality, how stage hypnotists work. They get their screened audience member talking, on one train of thought, then *interrupt with nonsense* in an effort to trick the mind into being in a confused state of trance.

Really, Google it, the whole phrase "confusion induction" or "interrupt induction" in the context of "stage hypnosis". The parallels between it and TV advertising are disturbing.

So yeah. It's not just the technology and the faster pace. The spam, or more precisely, the ways in which the advertisements are *forced on us*, are to some degree responsible.

Thanks for your time. ^_^ Have another star!

Impatient

Our multi-media instant information age has surpassed us in a few ways. We have become so used to having information and pretty much anything instantly, that people in some cases are becoming detatched from reality..... I am guilty like everyone else, I'd be a liar if I said it never happens to me, but I truly do try to be more patient with people. Also the use of cell phones and self-perceived importance factor into this... I hate to say it, but the larger and more powerful PDA device you have on your belt or if you grocery shop while talking through a Blue Tooth, I am guilty of mistaking you for a boorish, self serving prick.... in some cases I'm right, other's I'm jumping to conclusions. The few times I have been right, the person in question was SO RUDE to the cashier, that I felt that I NEEDED to say something to them.

Because our lives are wayy too crowded with trivial stuff. We just want to get on with life without getting held up by little irritating things. Humans need to simplify their lives because otherwise we'll be living in a depressed and manic world.

i believe that it is because we are so use to getting everything at fast service and when we have to wait our turn we get inpatient and that only leads to rudeness and ignorance with others, not to mention our self.
