It IS actually possible, but the regulations make it damned hard to do!

In essence, as long as the vehicle has been converted to the point that, "No commercial or hire/reward operations can be undertaken by the vehicle or its operator" and you get it approved by VOSA, you can drive it on a car licence.

There was an article in a road haulage magazine a few years back, where a geezer had converted a 38-tonne tractor unit into a mobile home. It cost him a whole lot of time, effort and money to get through the VOSA requirements - but he could drive it on a car licence!

Get in touch with VOSA to find out what you actually need to do.

I believe the law states that driving any vehicle over 7.5 tonnes requires an heavy good licence.

No sorry you can't. You are even regulated on the amount of hours you can drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle for !
If you drive for a living then you will have to log the amount of hours you drive any vehicle in the very near future !
Its european law gone mad !
