I know people don't know what I really look like but when you see my avatar do you assume I look similar to it?

No, they didn't have a picture of a fat, ugly slug with a mono-brow amongst the selections

I generally assume that people have similar features to that of their avatar - specifically the hair color. However, I couldn't find a haircut like mine, and as much as I'd like to be, I'm not itty bitty skinny like that!!! My hair is short and blond and I do have blue eyes and like the clothes. I also love sushi, which is why I put her in a sushi bar, but you certainly wouldn't recognize me from my alter-ego!
As a side note, for some reason I have a tendency to think that a lot of guys embellish their avatars (not all). I realize that's not a fair assessment, and it's probably equal for both sexes, I just get the impression, especially when I see pimp lookin' hats!!!

I don't have an aviator (the planes are kind of $$), but my avatar looks like me.

Very cute question. I do. Every now and then I try short hair and a different hair color. I also noticed that my friends make their aviators look like themselves and change their clothes a lot!

I think it rather unfair to force an aviator to look like me. Aviation is hard work, requiring diligent attention and determination when flying. I think most people recognise this, and therefore are very kind to pilots and other aviators (navigators, flight engineers, etc). Be kind to your airline staff.

I don't use a avatar, but in answer to your question, I do believe that people tend to get their avatars to resemble themselves.

If by like say a good deal skinnier, happier, and with better highlights, yes! :) LOL

No, my avatar looks nothing like the "real" me, but it's kinda similar.

I look a lot like my avatar actually. My hair is longer, but other than that it really looks like me. Yes I look like a cartoon... sigh!

Well my second look I had looked like me, someone told me.
This is my 4th avatar look and I'm not changing it again.
I don't know if you have since you haven't shared a photo with us.

Mine looks just like I looked in my early twenties. Why don't they have any fat avatars since most of us Americans are overweight?
