Some definitely do - and more will do so in the future. It's to make sure that they only employ honest people and also to prove that they have been diligent in their selection if anything goes wrong in the future. If you lie, you might get the job, but you'll be in a whole lot of trouble if they later find out that you did.

Do not lie on your CV, you never know if they are going to check up, but if they hire you and then check up later, they will give you the sack if it turns out that you lied. Being a liar is not a good trait to display to your employer, so don't do it. Don't risk it. If your results are no good then why don't you re-sit the exams?

It's spelled companies! And it depends how important the grades are. I dont think Sainsburys would check that you did indeed get an A in social science, but I think Microsoft would check that you did indeed get an A in Computer Studies.

It would depend upon the company and the type of position you are looking for. As a rule of thumb, don't bother. On the extreme end fo the scale would you like to find out that your doctor falsified his qualifications?
