I saw a documentary on this very thing not so long ago (I will see if I can I.D.the exact source before this Q goes off) It compared the way that higher mammals respond to stress. They compared the pacing characteristics displayed by caged animals to that of sales 'executives' on mobiles. The comparison was v noteworthy.
Now I am not suggesting that all mobile phone 'pacers' are under stress.... but it could have become a habit either from actual stress related calls OR a behaviour trait copied from such a situ.

Because they're trying to convey this message: "Hey look at me, everyone, I have a mobile phone, and not only that but I have someone on the other end to talk to, and I think you should all know that I am a very important person". Its the same when people walk around with one of those silly bluetooth ear thingies stuck to the side of their heads. They are to be used when you are driving, not just when you are out shopping or whatever. I saw a man with one when I went hiking up a mountain, for God's sake! Put it away, you saddo!

Lol I was actually thinking about this the other day,it might be for privacy, and to have a conversation without people listening in or watching, also it might e hard to stay in one place and hold a phone in your hand,so they move around, for example when you sit down for a long time you legs can get a bit to stiff/comfortable,so getting up lets you kick them out/get them back to how they were before.

it's rude to just sit there when you have guests. Personally hate having a cell phone, pay a bill every month so I can ignore the damn thing!

I do it and I can tell you it's not from stress or trying to get better reception and It's not showing off because I do it when I'm alone too. If I'm sitting down I just answer it - I don't get up and start pacing but if I'm standing up it's just like I can't just stand still.
Weird isn't it ?

Sometimes the signal isn't good on one spot so you have to move to get better reception. Most of the time people do that out of habbit I guess.

Because they wouldn't be mobile if they were sat down.
Kidding aside its a good point my advice ditch those mobiles.. Worst thing to happen to society.

Why indeed? I am guilty of it too and I don't do it for any of the reasons mentioned above such as privacy. I do it on the landline as well. It drives my colleague nuts as he has to move around to get away from me!

In the case of my daughter she is trying to get a decent signal downstairs in my house.

It prevents other people from hearing everything that's being said (by them).
That is, it gives some element of privacy.
