I've worked on other laptops with dead batteries in them that are hooked up to an AC, but it appears as though my wife's laptop (HP Pavilion DV4000) won't work unless I take the dead battery out and then hook it up to the AC adapter. Why is it doing that? Shouldn't it work as long as it's hooked up to an AC regardless if there's a dead battery in it or not, or is there something else that might be wrong? Also, we are using one of those aftermarket, one-size-fits-all laptop ac adapters because the factory one broke last year. One of my wife's students told her that non-factory ac's can overheat the computer and cause long term damage...is this true? Could it have contributed to the problem we are having now? Even when hooked up to the AC now, the screen keeps going between full-strength brightness and low-strength...What's going on?

Most laptops will work with a dead battery provided your a.c. adapter provides sufficient voltage at the needed power demand to drive the unit.

Using a generic charger may be the issue. It may be providing improper voltage or it may not be able to supply sufficient power at the proper voltage to drive the unit. It could also be delivering to high of a voltage and this may have caused battery failure and other internal circuit damage.

Check the original (now dead) power supply's d.c. voltage and current or d.c. voltage and power delivery capacity. Compare this to the new one. If the voltage differs you have a problem. If the voltage is the same and the current or power is less you have a problem.

maximum laptops will artwork if the battery is lifeless and the unit is plugged into the wall. i might suspect that the jack replaced into broken in case you may "jiggle" it to get it working lower back. because of the fact it won't potential on at a similar time as plugged in it is the potential adapter or the potential furnish unit interior the laptop.
