Change boots right when they split. Noise when they corner and accelerate and click the CV has to much slack. Clicking joints have been know to fail and need rebuilding or replacement.. All wheel drive cars may have 8 or more CV joints.

CV boots are lasting much longer on newer cars. Older cars boots would split open more easily and lose their joint grease as well as become contaminated with road dirt. So as long as the boot remains intact, you can expect CV joints to last maybe even the life of the car. Usually there's plenty of warning when they start to wear out, with clicking noises on turns etc. They're also used in 4 wheel drive applications in other drive shafts.
