Same reason all our call centre's are in India or Pakistan. Cheap labour.
I don't think we'd be held to ransom as such; possibly the other way around. Say if we, God forbid, went to war with Iran, China would lose a lot of revenue if it took Iran's side.
That said, I'm sad to see so little of our country's resources used in our country. It's utterly ridiculous.

Not really sure what your getting at?
If China is effectively our "supplier" and we are the "consumer" then we have the power of being able to go elsewhere for our good s if we want.... if India starts producing goods cheaper... we'll get them from there! If there was a war and China wasn't selling us anything anymore we'd manage! Manufacturing is something which takes off very very quickly... people can be trained quickly to do it and a lot of it is automated.
However as a service industry it can take years to train staff to a high level and the skills aren't so easily passed on. Also as the world becomes a more affluent place people are sepning MORE on services and LESS on goods. theres only so much "stuff" you can buy! So people are going on more exotic holidays, eating out at restaurants more etc.

Good question, glad to see you query the state we are in.
I agree that we live in a bubble, created by the wealth we amassed long time ago. There is no doubt that one day our bubble will burst. have a star
