Given that your asking about christmas, and on the east coast, unless you know people over there away from Atlanta that you can meet up with / get free lodgings, then surely there can and is only one answer. New York. Boston is good in autumn, and Washington is ok for the sights, but for everything, New York New York. You can spend ages there and still have stuff to do. Only problem with going at christmas, it will not be cheap! Failing that, Florida is reasonible at that time of year ~20 degrees c. You don't have to do Disney, plenty of nice beach side apartments along the gulf of mexico, or even go down to Miami or the keys. Depends whats sort of thing you want to do, and if you're willing you could even drive down there and stay in a few motels/b+bs along the way off the beaten track. Or... Drive along the south to somewhere like New Orleans?

I'd recommend Groningen in the Netherlands, it's not very well known but it is a small and friendly city and pubs, restaurants, etc. stay open on Christmas day, although you need to make a reservation at a restaurant if you're planning on eating out on the 24, 25 or 26 December.

Its gotta be Sydney in Australia. I went out there for Xmas in 2005, best xmas ever. Its there Summer throughout December as well. We had our Christmas turkey in the bbq in the garden by the pool in 35 degrees heat. Beats a miseraable cold, wet, white christmas. Although if u like a white christmas its gotta be Austria. I suppose it depends weather or not you want a traditional xmas or looking for some sun.

Jerusalem is a fantastic place to visit over xmas. On Christmas eve you can walk to Bethlehem, or just enjoy the atmosphere of old Jerusalem with it's narrow streets and bazaars. Its a special place, full of history and unique experiences that you'll remember forever.

For a truly magical and different Christmas how but Moscow. It is wonderful - snow covered, fantastic decorations and the best part everything is open on Christmas day cause they celebrate orthodox Christmas a week later. I've been all over the world for Christmas and this one is still my favourite.
Paris would be my second choice.

I highly recommend Prague. It's magical at Christmas. Even in time for New Year's celebration if you plan on staying long. You won't regret it.

If you can afford it there is only one place to go, New York, you would love it for shopping and great nights out, if you are looking in the uk I would say Oban in Scotland, its gorgeous.
