Our neighbours used to give us boxes of their old clothes. We loved it though, it was so exciting to get a big box of clothes we'd never seen before and go through and pick out something nice. I never minded that they were hand-me-downs. Now that I'm older I wonder what my parents thought of it, whether it was hard on their pride or they were just thankful that their children got "new" clothes.
We were also the only family in my school without a TV, dishwasher or car, although we got one when I was 8 or 9. I was sometimes embarrassed about it as a child. Children can be really nasty, especially if you're in any way different, and it was hard sometimes, I just wanted to be like the others. Now we're OK, my parents are seperated but each have enough money now, and I'm proud of my childhood. We had other things that a lot of privileged kids didn't have, and I think I learned to value money in a different way to them. I understand that it's important in order to be able to live, but not the be-all and end-all. I also have a better imagination imho, as I didn't have television to kill that.

Hmm... the house I grew up in had cracks in the windows big enough to stick a finger through, and the highlight of my freshman year of high school was a new pair of jeans... the first new pair I'd ever had. We had well water, and no phone for a number of years. That said, I grew up with it and I was used to it. It didn't really strike me until a couple of years ago, when a friend was talking about his daughter eating goldfish crackers. I knew what they were as a kid, but we never had any... except for once, when mom brought a box home from a salvage store where she worked. I still remember that, even though they were all crushed.

I found when I moved out that I could make more money working full time at minimum wage than my parents could spare to support me. I put myself through college, and now I'm in training to be a nursing assistant. I look forward to having health/dental/vision insurance steadily for the first time in my life.

For the guy who says you're not really poor if you're on the internet... I'm an adult now, and I provide for myself and my husband. The question was about childhood.

Yes all my friends were ALOT richer, I knew a girl whos father was on 250K a year and she boasted but Despite my poor back ground I always still believe[d] that there were people even poorer than my self, beacuse I always saw at least one tramp on the way home from school. - was going to give you the rest of my life story but never mind.
Although I never or rarely complained the Sad thing is I got older, I had money and I spent it. Should have respected it more from my experience but for the first time I could do every thing I hadn't been able to.

if you have running water and a roof over your house and also the following; NHS, DSS, free eye and dental care then you're not poor at all. think of the other people who don't have access to any one of the above list and count how lucky you are.
