Animals were laying eggs long before the first chicken walked on land. A better question would be, "which came first, the dinosaur or the egg?" Then I'd have to guess the dinosaur.

See the link below - Chicken and egg debate unscrambled. I don't know what the answer is, but they have a good point: regardless of where the egg came from, if there was a chicken in it, then it is a chicken egg. :)

The Chicken I believe. We believe that God said let there be this and that came into being. He must have said ''let there be a chicken and it came into being which then did laying the eggs for chickens. If he said an egg then this egg would not have hatched as it still needed a chicken to cause it hatch.

The egg.

As the chicken evolved into what we know now as a chicken, there was one point along the line where it bore more resemblance to a modern chicken then to the animal species it was evolving from, at that point, that was the first chicken, hatched from the first chicken egg....that was not laid by a chicken.

An egg can't exist without a chicken, so the chicken came first.

Chicken! God creates the animals, the eggs are produced by the animals. Just like woman give birth to babies, so the egg cannot create the chicken.

In biblical terms the chicken came first
In evolution terms the Egg came first due to the fact that it was either the result of mutation or a couple diff types of animals mixing.

Classic question!

I say the egg came first (and it did). Fish, amphibians and reptiles were laying eggs for millenia before the first true bird (much less chicken) evolved.
