* I was a member of PETA & still receive their mailings! I am against their scare tactics! Their ruse is to create media hysteria! I am one that works quietly behind the scenes, on a daily basis, to save animals' lives! They are out there creating the sensational not dealing with the mundane reality of pet over-population & euthanization!

I have no proof to give since I don't really follow what they do but I think most organizations like PETA have both more and less militant members.
I'll give you an example: Most PETA members believe that no animal testing should be done but there are those who will go as far join a petition or demonstration against it and those who will sabotage a research facility that experiments on animals risking human life.
The latter are considered extremists and they can be found in the midst's of PETA, Greenpeace and other similar organizations.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't support PETA if you believe in their mission but before you join make sure that you know enough about them.

i am a member of PETA. but like every human being (should), i am also a free-thinker. i don't agree with their methods at all times, but on the whole i agree with their mission statement.

PETA is an organization whose primary goal is to stop the abuse of animals. animal abuse includes circuses (pay attention to how they get the animals to perform), animal testing, dissection, and factory farming in addition to what we may encounter in our day-to-day travels. because of the fact that it is an organization that has used "extremist" (in the opinions of some) tactics in the past, it is often referred to as a terrorist organization. it also catches heat because the majority of the American public is people-centric frowns on anything that tests that mindset.

if you want actual facts, i'd advise you against using wikipedia, as anyone with a keyboard and a modem can make an entry. i can go onto wikipedia and create an entry saying that i'm to be crowned the next queen of England; it doesn't make it so.

if you're looking for information on animal-rights activism, then i think you should take a day and browse around either peta.org or peta2.com. if you're looking for information on vegetarian and vegan lifestyle, then you may want to try sites like vegsource, goveg, and veganoutreach.

my advice to you is to read everything you can from CREDIBLE sources on both sides of the issue and decide for yourself.

I will base my opinion on the truth on a comment by Steven Seagal, who said that he does not agree with everything the group does, but supports their fight for animal rights/advocacy.

I was once a member and am no longer because of my opinion the group is overly aggressive in fundraising, but that can be said about so many organizations nowadays.

They've done good work in alerting people to abuse of animals, but they believe that all uses of animals are abuse. Therefore, they're against any use of animals in medicine even if it leads to cures of people. They also have a tendency to use women, like having semi-naked girls show up somewhere to bring attention to their cause. I think if you look at their IRS form 990 on www.guidestar.org, you'll find that they pay their women employees less than men, but that might have changed. They also say things that seem anti-Semitic, like, "Six million Jews died in the Holocaust, but six Billion broiler chickens were killed last year." That's offensive, to compare Jews to chickens as if they were equal.

They are for animal rights, but they are also strongly in favor of mass euthanasia of unwanted pets---and this is the stuff that makes them so controversial with the very people who OUGHT to be supporting them, but do not. Not to mention the people who oppose them on the other side of the political spectrum . . .

I'm commiting a mortal sin by citing Wikipedia, but this sort of sums up their euthanasia stance, rather nicely:
