Kind of a trick question, because I have my own opinion...and that's obviously going to be the answer... but maybe someone will validate their own opinion and change my mind. Either way, seems like a good chance for discussion...

Oh, really, I didn't think this would confuse anyone, but I suppose I should clarify: by "man's" I mean mankind's. Sorry.

Communication.....without which nothing would have been possible...Let it be between two people, two groups, two nations...and through writing or land line or mobile or Internet...through oral or written or multimedia.....Without communication there is no sharing of information and we would have been still like primitive man...

Mankind’s greatest achievement is the destruction of Earth. We are great at this…we can do it better than any other species in the universe.
Our greatest ability is to interpret everything as fitting to our individual egotism, the diversity of beliefs and religious systems thus leading our selves in the path of self-destruction.

Well, if you have your own opinion about this, then I won't even intend to convince you otherwise. In my opinion, man's greatest achievement is the advancement of technology because of his tremendous ability to adapt to the constantly changing times and environment. One perfect example is the advancement in Genetic technology, although very controversial, since insects (pests) and bacteria evolve, man was able to adapt by finding continuous ways to control these pests by altering the genes of some vegetables or fruits which are resistant to these pests. It is man's relentless pursuit of survival that brought about this achievement.

Man's greatest ability is reason, by far. Man's greatest achievement thus far has been to use that ability to answer the questions that have puzzled mankind.

Mankinds' greatest ability is to think logicaly. The only being which can seek and find connections between different events and things is a man. Thanks to this ability mankind were and is able to research, develop, explore and invent. Everything can be logicaly explainrd and understood. Even feelings. And as for different so-called mysteries, such as ghosts and miracles and so on, they remain mysteries only for now.

Focus on one thing at a time.An ability is an intrinsic quality where as an achievement is an extrinsic outcome.I think, the greatest ability of a man(women included)is discrimination ie to analyze, differentiate ,judge and select. His greatest achievement is to have survived till today ( which means every thing he needed for it and did that).

I have to agree with Albert Einstein; he said that man's greatest invention is "compound interest". With the "miracle of compound interest" a modest savings account can grow to staggering amounts--

Oops, you said "achievement or ability". I think man's greatest achievement so far is putting one on another planet, well, moon actually. Man's greatest ability is figuring out how to get him there--our ability to think and reason and find solutions.

I won't say anything so esoteric or ethereal as "love" or "forgiveness"...but, man's conquest of the air. The ability to fly has created so many possibilities in the last century that it along with the capacity for international communication has expanded our horizons in ways we haven't even discovered yet!

Hi.
Yes, I think you had a answer before asking yourself. But this is my personal opinion. Achievement and ability are two notions that you can't take them apart. Them supplement together. Both of them filled with the same importance.
I think that you understand my point of view for this selection.
Sincerely,
