You can wear pretty much anything. A swirly skirt that goes about to the knees is pretty but the most important thing to remember is you're going to be moving around a lot so you will want to be comfortable as well as look good. Most importantly, leave the high heels at home unless your feet never get sore! I learned this the hard way.

Anything that is sexy yet tasteful is good. It needs to be comfortable to dance in, too. Wear a top that allows you to lift your arms without being pulled up and out of your pants. You can wear pants, preferably stretch, or a short-ish skirt that has enough movement in it. Skirts that don't work well include but not limited to pencil skirts, swing skirts, poodle skirts, long skirts on any kind. As for shoes - it's best of you have appropriate dance shoes, which is Latin sandals with suede soles and with heels. I find it much harder to dance salsa as a follower without heels. If you don't have dance shoes, then opt for something that will stay securely on your foot, doesn't have rubber sole that prevents turning, and with medium heels. High heels that are not designed for dancing is a big nuisance.
