What is a thought? What is thinking? How do you describe the first state of an idea: when it first forms in your mind, and you know and/or feel what it is, but do not put it into words?

What do we think in?Image? Language? Emotion? Thought/idea?

I don't want to spoil this with you and EV but a thought is an unseen idea in your brain. Or is it? For instance we are taught math in school. And the idea is transferred from teacher to student. Thoughts are subjective for instance people can be looking at the same picture but it can mean different things to different people.

We think ideas in words and pictures. Emotions tend to override words and pictures by action so that we don't think before we act sometimes.

That's my two points worth.

Hey Aetheru, very interesting thought. You have used so many words like 'thought', 'idea', 'mind', 'feel', 'words' etc. All those are your thoughts, aren't they? How do you know that there is a world outside your thoughts? Your thought is YOU. You don't have existence outside the realm of your thought.! Forget the first, second or third state of an idea, whether you put it into word and further into deed, you ARE your THOUGHTS.

for me, the first state of an idea is usually an image or an emotion, before it develops into a thought..

Please bear with me for a layman's answer.

In my view, thought is mental action. It can only be in the same medium as how our mind receives information from any experience.... obviously therefore one can not think in a language one has no knowledge of.

Thought as a mental action can either precede or succeed physical action... meditative or contemplative thoughts though begin through an intent and end up merely in storing the result in memory.

Thought being mental action means that it is the work of our self through our mind.

Nothing quite like asking a simple question, is there?
I've been fascinated by the science of consciousness for almost 20 years. 'Thought' is one aspect of consciousness that may or may not be almost a seperate area of study, but is certainly a part of the science. ('Self awareness' is another big one)
There are no shortage of theories about how thoughts form, how we think, how we form associations between aparently unrelated pieces of information, etc. etc. If you want a good place to start, try the Center for Consciousnes Studies at the University of Arizona. (I live in Tucson and it's almost in my back yard ☺)

They have quite a few good items on their website and links to lots more.

I think its feeling, an emotion.

Believe it or not the first thing I thought of was joy at your beautiful question(not that I'm trying for a best answer) it really did make me feel good that you conveyed such a simple question with such complicated issues which humanity has been trying to solve.

thanks

p.s. if you find the answer let me know...lol
