The parents.
their behaviour is what, at best, i'd call unique. their neglect of the children, their lies, their silence pact amongst friends, their hurry to set up a non-charitable "fund" to raise money, their hurry to hire a lawyers from the moment almost, Madeleine went missing, their PR, their media spin. it's all a total joke and orchistrated to discredit the PJ and be held accountable for any of their selfish actions.

I think it's a combination of things........the circumstances in which she went missing......the efforts by her parents to keep her face in the public eye (which, whatever you think of them, has worked; we're still talking about her aren't we)....and the complete mystery around it all, 5 months on there are still very few hard facts, no body, no confirmed sightings, and not a lot of evidence. People talk about it so much because it is such a mystery, nobody really knows what happened to Madeleine, and they want the case solved.

Does anybody "know" anything about this case?
Every missing child case has different circumstances which make it unlike all the others in some way, so you could say they're all unique.
If you mean unique in the amount of press coverage it has received, it's not really that either. The case of the dingo baby got just as much -albeit mainly in Australia, and (though I'm assuming you really mean missing children) likewise the OJ Simpson case which was televised for hours every day.
The main differences to other abduction cases I know of are the success of the parents at keeping the case in the news (some of which has been due to the parents' and family's persistence, part fed by the press attention, part by empathy from the public) and the fundraising (ditto).
I think the main thing that has polarised this case so much into Pro's and Anti's is the fact that there is an issue with possible child neglect here. If the parents were completely blameless as regards watching over the children, but Madeleine was abducted/accidentally killed anyway, I doubt if there would have been such strong emotions against the McCanns in the absence of any proof.
Sorry if that's not educated enough for you, or by "only educated answers " did you really mean "only anti-McCann answers"?

A few factors made this case unique.
Firstly Madeleine went missing abroad.
Her parents had left her and other children unsupervised in a holiday apartment.
Her parents were respectable professionals
The campaign they launched was like no campaign we had ever seen before
I don't recall any other parent using PR before although in this case, it could be argued that, and due to Portugese laws they were not allowed to discuss the case themselves.
I don't recall any prime Minister making it so clear that he was on the parents side. other children went missing (Ben Needham for one) And the Prime Minister at the time did try to help but certainly not as publicly as present one did for Madeleine.
Mass media always eacts to this sad kind of event as it means photographs, articles sell papers but never on this scale before.
So really ... Quite a lot!
Oh and of course the fact that both Portugese Police and British Police are involved, fact that there seems to be (According to the papers) no mutual respect between them.
I think all this has contributed to the fact that the little girl at the centre of all this has long ceased to be the focus. It's all about her parents, how they feel, how they are hurt and upset about allegations.
Had they been with her/Ask the nanny to look after her and siblings there would have been none of this. She wouldn't have gone missing.
I think as parents ourselves we feel more divided about this case than anything else.

Hoorah! i grow to be hoping you will p.c.. Eden. i think of Eden Sophia Matthews flows greater useful than Eden Amelie Matthews. That stated, i understand the call Amelie form of has your call in it, so as which could be a severe high quality thank you to bypass it on. yet i think of Eden Sophia Matthews is magnificent, and that i'd truly have the initials ESM than EAM. Congratulations and that i choose you the excellent of success including your being pregnant (and later adoption in line with probability!)

I think the reason this case is unlike others is because not only do we hear that a tiny 3 year old has gone missing, apparently from her bed whilst on a family holiday.
Which is dreadful enough.
Then we learn that the parents were out, leaving 3 tots alone whilst they booze it up with friends.
That is hair-raising.
Next came the discovery of the parents possibly drugging the said 3 tots before leaving them.
Outragous behaviour for any parent, let alone doctors.
All that & then the lies about how far the bar was from the kids.
Need I go on?
There is enough here to make a lot of people suspicious of the parents even without taking into account their behaviour & mannerisms. It catches our attention & we can`t let it go until we hear of justice for Madeleine.

This case is complex for reasons not initially thought. Portugal has reasons to believe that the parents should be implicated but cannot do too much. If they accuse any tourist of killing his/her child, it could lead to a backlash of failed tourism. No country wants that, especial Portugal. Portugal and Spain depend heavily on travel and tourism. GB residents move or travel there and are helping the economy.
On the contrary, a crime has been committed. Portugal police are probably collaborating with Scotland Yard for clarity and damage controll. Do not fret because the parents are not answering questions. If your child was missing, you would not want to talk to every Tom, Dick, and Harry.
The best thing for them is to talk to the appropriate authority and no one else. Try not to form a judgemental attitude. Regardless of your gut feelings, what if you are wrong? You would be doing the unpardonable; condemining parents who lost the precious gift of a child.
Yes, there are several unanswered questions, and they are not the poster parents for how to raise children. Be that as it may, this is an ongoing investigation.

Absolutely nothing at all. She was the eldest daughter of a vacationing family which made the very wrong mistake of leaving their drugged and sleeping chidlren in a hotel room, in a foreign country whilst they went to have supper with friends.
The media has made this a big deal but this little girl is like any other little girl who has been abducted and she has probably ended up the way that most do.
There are hundreds of Madeleines out there, waiting to be found, why this one gets so much press I don't know other than the fact her parents are PR people.

Has to be the media coverage and the fact that the kids were left unattended at night in the apartment I think really caught peoples attention.

This case is unique for the following reason.
Her parents have the backing of some very rich, high profile people. There is no other couple in their position, that I know of, that has ever received so much help from a government or super rich business men and celebrities.
Knowing what they did and the position they now find themselves in, it is rather surprising.
