Drives Me crazy too. My doctor prescribed Rozerem (sp?) so I went to get the RX filled, it was $114.00! It wasn't covered under my insurance, so no RX. I called the insurance company, they waited to hear from the doctor, he didn't call. I called the insurance company again and they said that they covered Ambien, I called the office and left a message as to what the ins. company said again!. I get a voice mail, that he doesn't prescribe narcotics, I called him back and said whatever you want to prescribe is fine....2 weeks later and still no prescription
Fortunately yesterday morning I had to take a friend to an imaging center for some tests and had to get up at 4:30 anyway

I have found ,since getting older that I only need about 4-5 hours of sleep. I stay up sometimes until 2am and set the alarm to get my grandaughter up for school. I get up feeling more refreshed than if I slept all night. Sometimes when I first try to settle in for the night I find my mind starts ruminating about everything under the sun! I turn my radio on to some easy listening music and I'm out like a light.
I hope this helps. If you share a room with someone ,use ear phones .

Try the couch or a recliner or a different setting than your bed and see if that helps. I sleep about 4 hours a night and am then up until I take a nap in the morning for maybe an hour sometimes I nap in the afternoon also, depends on how I feel, when you get the urge to sleep do it.

Some nights are like that. Its no use fighting it, just go with the flow. Get up and do something for 1/2 hr or so then try again, you cant force it tho.
I had a night just like that recently and ended up staying awake all night.
I just got up every now and then and pottered around then tried again. Try not to get upset about it or it will get worse.

I've always suffered from insomnia, but it was getting much worse as I got older. My thoughts always seemed to race, mulling over the most silly and ridiculous topics and stopping me from relaxing.
Then, for Christmas my dear techno-loving partner gave me an iPod. At first I thought, well OK what do I use this for ? Then I read an article about how distraction can help you to sleep, ie give your brain something really repetitive, soothing and quiet to concentrate on, and the racing thoughts can be settled down.
I bought a couple of CD's specially recorded for new-born babies, with lullabies recorded in a low-pitched, rhythmic manner with no "highs" or "lows" to distract you. I put these on the iPod, and got myself some really soft and comfortable ear-plugs.
I can honestly say that after a lifetime of insomnia, this works for me. The soft and repetitive music keeps my brain from thinking about anything else, and I'm sleeping like, well, like the babies that the music is intended for.
I'd highly recommend this to anyone.....you've nothing to lose but your sleeplessness !

Too much on your mind? Ate or drank something before bed with caffeine? Afraid of something (or someone?) overtired? These are the things that keep me awake. I can't remember the last time I had a good night's sleep.

A simple exercise in Yoga for fighting insomnia is known as Yoga Nidra. The word Nidra means sleeping. In this Yoga, first you have to determine your most appropriate posture. When you wake up, do not move. Observe closely your posture.i.e. whether you are lying to your left or right, the position of your head, shoulder, hands and legs. Remember the posture minutely as this is going to be your sleeping posture from today onwards. Now,when you go to sleep, go into this posture first. Then notice your breath and start counting mentally You have to count from 100 to 1 backwards. When you exhale, mentally count 100. When exhale next breath ,you count 99 .Likewise you go one number backward every time you exhale. No other thought except the numbers should be in your mind.If any thought does enter the mind, you have to restart the counting from 100.It is a tested Yoga practice. You are requested to spread this technique to as many persons as possible to alleviate their sufferings.

My shift never helped me either. I try to go to bed bt 330 am here. At least then I get a few hours & can still function. At least look at it that way for this evening so you can function tomorrow. Heaven help you if you have to get up early.

ever tried progressive relaxation?
tense each muscle group, starting with your feet, moving the whole way up your body, everything...
hold the muscles tightly for 10-15 seconds, then relax them. it should take you a good while (maybe half hour?) dont rush, its all about relaxation and making yourself comfortable.
good luck. :)
