Tantale killed his own son, Pelope, and gave him to the gods in a feast. As punishment, Tantale was destined to be perpetually standing up to the chin in a lake that dryed up whenever he tried to drink, and when he tried to grab fruit, the branches were moved by the wind far away of his reach

Tantalus in Greek mythology was sentenced to stand waist-deep in a stream that receded when he tried to bend down to drink, and with overhanging fruit tree branches with fruit on them that pulled away when he tried to grab them. From we get the word "tantalize."
