When a baby dies of SIDS it is because they are often in a deep sleep and forget to breathe. If they are sucking a pacifier they are usually only ever in a lighter sleep and never reach the deep sleep stage and sucking the dummy keeps the body from forgetting to breathe...or something like that!!

There is some different theroys but they are not sure.
They think maybe the pacifier causes a tent effect that keeps the babies face from pressing into the bedding.
Or maybe that children who take pacifiers are fussier babies who wouldn't sleep as heavily and would wake up if they quit breathing.
Heck they are not even sure exactly why sids occurs so they can't exactly say why some babies don't have it or exactly how to prevent it.
Here is a site that tells yo about some research they did in California about it.

If the baby stops breathing (and not continually holding the pacifier in) .. when it falls out of their mouth it will wake them and they will remember to breathe.

When I was in the hosp. a nurse told me that the pacifier reminds them to keep breathing. Because they are sucking, they have to breathe.

From what I've read, it seems like researchers aren't sure exactly how the two are related; they just know they are.
